Most Americans support building the wall and arresting or deporting illegal immigrants, according to a weekend poll conducted by CBS News and YouGov.
Specifically, 48 percent of adults polled said they would like to see families remain together, but sent back to their home countries. Fifteen percent stated they prefer offenders be arrested. Only 21 percent said they would like to go back to the “catch and release” policy used by the Obama administration.
When asked if they think building a wall along the U.S. – Mexican border is a good idea, 51 percent of adults answered yes, while 48 percent said building a wall is a bad idea.
The poll showed a deep division between Democrat and Republican adults in the way illegals should be treated. Only 21 percent of Democrats feel illegals should be “punished as an example of toughness,” while 73 percent of Republicans said punishment was the way to go.
Sixty-one percent of Americans stated the treatment of families at the border will have a strong influence on their Congressional votes this November. Democrats led that pack at 84 percent, Independents were next at 55 percent, followed by 43 percent of Republicans.
A sample of 2,063 American adults were polled between June 21-22, 2018. Complete poll results can be downloaded here.
Trump Renews Demand ‘Build the Wall,’ One Prominent Liberal Agrees
Building a wall on the Southern border was a major campaign promise for President Donald Trump, but he has been unsuccessful convincing Congress to fund the project. Last week, liberal pundit Andrew Sullivan said in New York Magazine it is time to change that. “So give him his f***ing wall. He won the election. He is owed this,” Sullivan wrote. “It may never be completed; it may not work, as hoped. But it is now the only way to reassure a critical mass of Americans that mass immigration is under control, and the only way to make any progress under this president.”
On June 25, President Trump renewed his demand for a wall by tweeting, “If this is done, illegal immigration will be stopped in it’s tracks – and at very little, by comparison, cost. This is the only real answer – and we must continue to BUILD THE WALL!”
