Beto: ‘Hell Yes, We’re Gonna Take Your AR-15’

Democrat presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke vowed to confiscate guns from Americans at Thursday’s Democratic Presidential Debate.

“Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work,” moderator David Muir asked. “I am, if it’s a weapon designed to kill people on a battlefield,” O’Rourke responded.

A large portion of the crowd cheered as O’Rourke went on to say, “Hell yes, we’re gonna take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not gonna allow it to be used against our fellow americans anymore.”

While O’Rourke focussed on the AR-15 and AK-47, he ignored the fact that most gun crimes are committed with handguns.

“The overwhelming majority of firearms that we deal with are handguns,” attorney Anton Bell told the Daily Press. “They’re more accessible. They are easily hidden, and the key to a lot of the crimes is being able to bring these guns anywhere. With the handguns, you can conceal them and they not be detected. … And we absolutely have far too many illegal handguns on the street.”

Many hunting rifles pack a bigger punch than the AR-15. Some believe those speaking out against the rifle are judging a book by its cover. “The problem with the AR-15 is the way it looks,” said retired New York Police sergeant Joseph Giacalone. “It looks like a military firearm. I think that’s the draw about it, too. There are other guns on the market that do the same thing. They just don’t look as — for lack of a better word — sexy.”

O’Rourke doubled down on his statements a few hours later. He tweeted, Hell yes, we’re gonna take your AR-15.”

But Charlie Kirk, of Turning Point USA, pointed out the change in O’Rourke’s stance on the issue. Kirk pointed out when O’Rourke ran for Senate against Ted Cruz (R-TX), he said owners of AR-15s would be able to keep their guns, as opposed to threatening an all out confiscation on Thursday.
