The head of the Democratic National Committee named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the “future of the party,” an unambiguous message that the Democrat Party is shifting towards socialism.
Ocasio-Cortez won New York’s 14th Congressional District primary race, edging out ten year incumbent Joe Crowley (D-NY). A self-proclaimed “Democrat Socialist,” she campaigned on free college, free healthcare, and guaranteed jobs for everyone.
Another promise: Open borders.
After her primary win, the 28 year old first-time candidate told Al Jazeera she wants to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). When asked what should replace the agency that protects our borders from illegal entry, she said it should be replaced with a system that allows safe passage to all.
“I think that immigration should be safe, “she said. “I think that we should grant people a safe and documented right of passage.”
Ocasio-Cortez says she wants the detentions at the border to cease, but in doing so, she did acknowledge the policy of detaining illegal border crossers was not of President Donald Trump’s making. “What we really need to do is demilitarize a lot of what’s going on in terms of the detention of people, which has been happening for a very long time by the way,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez is on a clear path to winning the November general election. New York’s 14th Congressional District consists of over 400,000 registered Democrats and only 68,000 Republicans.
