A newly released video allegedly shows a Minneapolis police officer smothering a handcuffed suspect, while bystanders plead for the man’s life.
According to reports, George Floyd was suspected of forgery and initially resisted arrest. The video, released on YouTube, begins with Floyd already in custody. An officer is kneeling on the neck of the handcuffed suspect. Floyd can be heard yelling that he was in trouble. “Please. Please. I can’t breathe, officer. I cannot breathe. I cannot breathe,” he cried.
Within minutes, Floyd is shown going limp, but the officer continues to keep pressure on a motionless Floyd. A state trooper enters the picture to check the suspect’s pulse, while the first officer kept his knee on the back of Floyd’s neck.
“He’s not responsive right now,” a male voice from the crowd yells. The man repeats the statement multiple times, as an officer warns the crowd to step back.
The incident happened Monday, outside a deli in Minneapolis. Floyd later died at a nearby hospital. Four officers have been fired and the FBI has been called in to investigate whether civil rights charges are warranted.
