Fireworks erupted as a senior Republican laid into FBI Agent Peter Strzok during a joint hearing of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees Thursday.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asserted a “smirking” Strzok was lying under oath, similarly to the way he “lied” to his wife while having an affair with former FBI lawyer Lisa Page.
When pressed to withdraw his accusation by Rep David Cicilline (D-RI), Gohmert said, “I do not withdraw it.” Democrats continued their objections to the line of questioning, at one point calling it a disgrace. “The disgrace is what this man has done to our justice system,” Gohmert responded.
“I’ve talked to FBI agents around the country,” Gohmert continued. “You’ve embarrassed them, you’ve embarrassed yourself, and I can’t help but wonder when I see you looking there with a little smirk how many times did you look so innocent into your wife’s eyes and lie to her about Lisa Page?”
“You need your medication,” Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) shouted at Gohmert.
Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) was shown laughing at the fiery exchange.
“Mr. Chairman, this is intolerable harassment of the witness,” Cicilline declared, as committee chairman Bob Goodlatte banged the gavel.
Peter Strzok is the former Chief of the Counterespionage Section and led the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email server. Earlier this year, it was discovered Strzok exchanged anti-Trump text messages with former FBI attorney and alleged lover Lisa Page.
